Orthodontics

  • Braces are titanium and metal alloy segments that are placed on the teeth to help move and align the teeth into their proper positions. These are traditional braces. There are “invisible” braces which are just clear mouth pieces that are worn. Both aim to align the teeth in relation to the jaw and other teeth.

  • A dentist may recommend braces for many reasons. The overall goal of braces is to align the patient’s bite. In other words, to achieve straight teeth. Many patients see braces as an opportunity to achieve better aesthetics and boost their confidence. But having straight teeth is not only for aesthetics. Having an aligned bite can decrease the chance of developing jaw pain or TMJ issues in the future. Many patients who suffer from headaches and jaw pain benefit from having an aligned bite. Also, having straight teeth make maintenance and home care easier for patients. Therefore, many patients are able to brush and floss effectively after having an aligned bite. This decreases the chance of developing gum disease and cavities in the future.

  • Often, patients wear braces for 3-4 years. In some cases, patients may need surgery before or during their orthodontic visits. This depends on the patient, and this can elongate the treatment period.

Here at Mission Dental, we emphasize the positive effects that result from braces. Though braces can be an uncomfortable process, the result is definitely worth it. We aim to provide a clear schedule of how long the patient can expect to wear the braces. Again, it depends on the patient’s compliance to show up to appointments and clean their teeth well during this time.

  • Invisalign is clear aligners that straighten teeth without the metal traditional brackets. Invisalign is a commonly preferred method to straighten teeth. Patients must wear them and take them off to clean. Patients receive different sets of aligners that continue to align their teeth little by little.

  • In terms of effectiveness, invisalign is not shown to be better than traditional braces. However, the great pro of having invisalign is not having bulky metal braces. Many adults prefer this option as invisalign is more subtle and aesthetically preferable. Also, Invisalign eliminates many of the discomforts associated with metal braces- lip cutting, bulkiness, and cheek discomfort.

  • The treatment process depends heavily on the patient’s bite and case. The length of treatment can range from 6 months to 4 years.

  • This is also dependent on how long the treatment will take. Shorter treatments require less sets of aligners which will lower the cost. Longer treatments will require many more sets of aligners which will increase the cost. Generally, Invisalign is around $3000-$5000. Depending on the case complexity, the cost can be less or greater than the general range.

  • Most people are good candidates for invisalign. If you are not a good candidate for invisalign, your dentist will explain why and also offer different treatment options to straighten your teeth. Contact your dentist to ask more questions.
